Word of mouth is a glass ceiling

Word of mouth is the noblest channel there is. It is also the most flattering: every new mandate that arrives by referral confirms that the work speaks for itself. And that is precisely what makes it dangerous: it anaesthetises.

Word of mouth is a glass ceiling

Look at what word of mouth really is: a channel you do not control, do not measure and cannot accelerate. It depends on the chance of conversations, on your clients' memory and on the size of their network, not yours. When it works, you do not know why. When it slows, you do not see it coming: today’s order book reflects referrals from eighteen months ago. The day the phone rings less, the cause is already old, and it is too late to correct it comfortably.

There is a second, more structural limit. Word of mouth reproduces your existing clientele: your clients recommend you to people like them, for mandates like the last ones. It is a channel of continuity, not of growth. It will never bring you the higher segment: the one where you are not yet known and where decisions are made on what is visible.

Finally, an asymmetry few leaders weigh: a referral does not exempt you from being checked. The partner who hears about you types your name before calling. If what he finds falls short of what he was told, the referral dies in silence. Word of mouth is therefore not an alternative to perception: it depends on it.

The conclusion is not to abandon the channel. It is to stop sheltering behind it. A healthy business treats word of mouth as a dividend, not a strategy: alongside it, it builds a perception that works for it, visible, measurable, controlled. The day referrals slow, it does not even notice.
